This weeks “useful website” is more than just a website, its more like a “web-tool” or “internet tool”. Xmarks.com is where you can download the Xmarks browser add-on that will synchronize your browsers bookmarks/favorites across the same computer or multiple computers. Xmarks works with Firefox and Internet Explorer on Windows and Firefox and Safari on MacOS. A Chrome version is due out soon as well. All of it, of course, for FREE!
If Xmarks’s value is not apparent then the second you install it, it will. Besides syncing your bookmarks/favorites, Xmarks:
1. Can backup/restore your links. Just in case you don’t already backup regularly.
2. Allows online access to your bookmarks/favorites. Useful if you don’t have access to your main computer.
3. Can sync your web passwords (Firefox only). Nice feature, but I don’t use this myself. Wary of any third-party system knowing any of my passwords.
For me, this is one of those websites or tools I use everyday and on every machine and I could not do without it. I have over 150 bookmarks, tagged, sorted, and grouped by folders and managing this across different browsers on different machines was almost impossible before Xmarks. The Xmarks add-on used to be for Firefox only but now I have the IE version and the Chrome version installed and life is even better. A bookmark I set on my work desktop PC in Firefox shows up on my home PC in Chrome or on my MacBook in Safari, automatically.
At some point, Xmarks may start charging for this tool or some more advanced version. That maybe the only way to make any money with this because there really isn’t a way to make any with advertisement. So get on board now before they change it.
