Secure your network, change the default password to your router

Changing your default router password is one of the easiest things to do to secure your network.  The problem is most people don’t know how, don’t care to, or forget the password they set originally.    But if you don’t know how, all you have to do is reference the router’s manual for instructions.  If you don’t care or understand how critical it is to do so, then I should ask if you keep your front door open at night also?  I can understand in some situations why someone wouldnt have a WIFI password in place; public use area, or you just want to share your ubundant bandwidth connection.  But not changing the default password of the router out of the box is like not changing the locks after moving into a new apartment.

Ok, that may sound harsh or an overstatement but setting a router password will take a minute at least of your time and might save you some heartache in the future.  If you don’t set a password, locking unauthorized access to the heart of your network, its just that easier for someone unscruppulous to cause you harm.  How?  I will illustrate with one example.   I did a check recently of all the wireless or WIFI networks in my imediate neighborhood and found 5 out of 10 of them were unsecured WIFI spots.  Of the unsecured, 3 of them were using the default password on their router.  I am not going to discuss how I did this; just trust me when I say if I was a hacker I could easily change the password to whatever I like from the street and take control of that persons network.

Forgot the router password?

You may have to reset your router to the factory setting.  Most routers have a reset button or procedure to set the password back to factory. Keep in if you don’t have the router manual anymore or have trouble retrieving it you will need to know the default password somehow before you can access and configure it.   Routerpasswords.com is a website that list default passwords for most routers.  Keep in mind that hackers use this website to.
