Early last year I wrote about one of the easiest ways to provide internet filtering for your home network. Read: http://cibertek.net/blog/2009/02/22/keep-your-family-safe-with-opendns/. At the time, OpenDNS had only one mode and only one set of options. Recently, they’ve expanded their features list under a “Deluxe Plan” and are now charging a small fee to use it.

New on-demand virus detection results for 2010
by The Cibertek on 17. Jun, 2010 in Featured, Security, Technology
My favorite independent anti-virus testing site just released their “Proactive/retrospective test” for 2010. This report is the companion to the tests done back in February 2010 and concentrates on the ability of the AV software to detect new malware is they come out.
Top 7 online backup services
by The Cibertek on 09. Jun, 2010 in Security, Software
I’ve been pounding the drums for a while now about backing up your data. Besides me, there are probably thousands of magazine articles, blog posts, and new software companies popping up almost every month dedicated to the subject. This has caused a shift in the type of questions I get from clients. For instance, more of my clients ask me about the “how” more than the “why”.
Cisco – Linksys launches new home wireless routers
by The Cibertek on 06. Apr, 2010 in Networking, News, Security, Software
Cisco Home Products, a.k.a Linksys, launches a new home wireless product line this month called “Valet”. My first impression is it looks like a great product for home users who either don’t have a wireless network already or for those who want to upgrade what they have quickly and simply.
Secure your network, change the default password to your router
by The Cibertek on 29. Jan, 2010 in Networking, Security, Videos
Changing your default router password is one of the easiest things to do to secure your network. The problem is most people don’t know how, don’t care to, or forget the password they set. But if you don’t know how, all you have to do is reference the router’s manual for instructions. If you don’t care or understand how critical it is to do so, then I should ask if you keep your front door open at night also?
Microsoft releases patch to fix the “Google Hack” flaw
by The Cibertek on 21. Jan, 2010 in News, Security
If you are one of the lucky people who are still using IE6, Microsoft has released an “out-of-band security update for the Internet Explorer vulnerability used in the recent Chinese attacks on Google.” So download this patch as soon as possible. Better yet, it might be time to upgrade to IE8 or download and use Firefox instead.
Microsoft Security Essentials gets a high rating on AV-Comparatives
by The Cibertek on 09. Dec, 2009 in Security, Software
Ever since I wrote this post back in July: “Is WSE the antivirus you’ve been waiting for?” I, have been waiting for AV-Comparatives to give it its blessing.
Is WSE the antivirus you’ve been waiting for?

In a few short months Microsoft will release for direct-download, a totally free and good anti-virus program. The old and almost useless program called “OneCare” is gone as of June 30th.
7 Steps to protecting a home network
by cibertek on 07. Jun, 2009 in Networking, Security
Until just a few years ago, I used a “full featured” Internet Security software. The common practice was to have some sort of software firewall to protect your system from Internet attacks. Most of these programs come bundled now with Anti-Virus software, browser protection, spam protection, and spyware protection. Back in the day, I used Zone Alarm then later I started to use Symantec Internet Security and finally graduated to Norton 360 back in 2004. Today, I don’t use any of them. In fact, I think they are some of the worst things you can put on your Windows system. They’re basically now just “Bloatware”; overgrown and overpriced software to make you feel like your protecting your system from hackers.
Cibertek’s Top Anti-Virus for 2009

What Anti-Virus program should I use?
I get that question at least once a week. My answer is usually whatever AV program I happen to be running at the time. Over the years the answer has changed. Because I’ve had to rebuild, restore, or clean several of my system over the years because of viruses; I am a firm believer in having some sort of AV or Malware scanner running in the background. So I’ve tried almost every AV software out there from Norton (Symantec), McAffee, and One Care to Kaspersky
and ESET NOD32.
