For this weeks SPW or Software Pick of the Week, I need to give credit to my favorite podcasts, Tekzilla, for turning me on to it. It’s called “Soluto” and I have been waiting for something like this for years.

Top 7 online backup services
by The Cibertek on 09. Jun, 2010 in Security, Software
I’ve been pounding the drums for a while now about backing up your data. Besides me, there are probably thousands of magazine articles, blog posts, and new software companies popping up almost every month dedicated to the subject. This has caused a shift in the type of questions I get from clients. For instance, more of my clients ask me about the “how” more than the “why”.
Cisco – Linksys launches new home wireless routers
by The Cibertek on 06. Apr, 2010 in Networking, News, Security, Software
Cisco Home Products, a.k.a Linksys, launches a new home wireless product line this month called “Valet”. My first impression is it looks like a great product for home users who either don’t have a wireless network already or for those who want to upgrade what they have quickly and simply.
Why are people still NOT backing up their digital data?
by The Cibertek on 23. Mar, 2010 in Maintenance, Software, Tools
To me, most people seem to think running a backup on their machine is an option instead of a necessity. Over the past two weeks, I’ve personally helped two people recover from complete system failures or hard drive crashes and another lost her entire Itunes music library. In all three cases, none of them had a backed up and their digital data.
Windows 7 hidden treasures: Sticky Notes
by The Cibertek on 02. Mar, 2010 in Software, Tools
Windows 7 Sticky Notes is the digital version of Post-it Notes. It’s installed by default and as part of the Windows 7 accessories package.
No more YouTube support on IE6
by The Cibertek on 23. Feb, 2010 in News, Software
Another reason to upgrade or get rid of IE6 if you are on the Windows platform, YouTube will not work on it after next month. Keep in mind, you dont have to use IE to browse the web. If you have an old XP machine, you can still install Firefox or Chrome and they will work fine
Times almost up for the Windows 7 Release Candidate
by The Cibertek on 16. Feb, 2010 in News, Software, Updates
If you were one of the brave souls to try the beta version of Windows 7 last spring, time is almost up. Microsoft sent out an email today warning everyone who still had the “Windows 7 RC” what to expect in the next few months
Useful webapp of the week #8: Alternative.net
by The Cibertek on 25. Jan, 2010 in Links, Software, Tools
Have you ever needed a specific software installed but couldn’t afford the cost of the software license and wished you had another choice? Or, have you ever wondered if there was an alternative or replacement for a piece of software that was no longer available or was to old to run on your current system? Try using Alternativeto.net to find “alternatives”; Open Source, freeware or shareware, that do the same or close to the same thing as the expensive and popular ones.
Useful webapp of the week #7: Evernote
by The Cibertek on 20. Jan, 2010 in Software, Technology, Tools
Starting with this post, I am making a slight change in the title of this weekly post. It’s a small change from “website” to “webapp”. The basic reason is that is that I believe that most websites that are really useful or make life easier in some way, are a lot more than just good web design. They are more like functional web based applications. This is especially true of my favorite webapp to date: Evernote.
Useful website of the week #6: Xmarks.com
by The Cibertek on 05. Jan, 2010 in Software, Tools
This weeks “useful website” is more than just a website, its more like a “web-tool” or “internet tool”. Xmarks.com is where you can get the Xmarks add-on that will synchronize your bookmarks/favorites across the same computer or multiple computers.
